ISO, DIN and ASTM: How to Read a Fastener Standard

Open any page in our repository and you will find a standard next to the product code: ISO 4014, DIN 933, ASTM A325, ASME B18.2.1. Those references are not labels we attach for tidiness. Each one is a complete specification — geometry, material, mechanical properties and the tests the part must pass — and knowing how to read one removes most of the ambiguity from a purchase.

What the number covers

A dimensional standard fixes the shape: head size across flats, head height, thread length, run-out, tolerances. DIN 933 and ISO 4017 both describe a fully threaded hex bolt, but the head dimensions differ on several sizes — which is why a drawing that says only “hex bolt M12” is not yet a specification.

Where the strength lives

Mechanical properties sit in a separate standard. For metric bolts that is ISO 898-1, which defines the property classes — 8.8, 10.9, 12.9 — and for nuts ISO 898-2, with classes 8, 10 and 12. The first number of a bolt class relates to tensile strength, the second to the ratio of yield to tensile. A grade 8.8 bolt paired with a class 6 nut is a mismatched joint no matter how correct the dimensions are.

The ASTM and ASME route

North American practice splits the same information differently. ASTM covers the material and mechanical requirements — A325 and A490 for structural bolting, A193 and A194 for high-temperature and high-pressure service — while ASME B18 covers the dimensions. A complete specification usually names one from each family.

Reading a line in our catalogue

Each product page states the standard and edition, the dimensional table, and the documents that travel with the order. Where a product answers to more than one standard, every applicable reference is listed, so a buyer working to a European drawing and an engineer working to an American one can both confirm the same part.

When the drawing and the standard disagree

This is the case worth a phone call. A drawing that calls for a non-standard length, a modified head or a special material is a custom part, and we manufacture those on request. What we will not do is ship a standard part against a drawing it does not actually satisfy — the joint is what matters, not the paperwork.
